Tomodachi Life and my ongoing tech battle
This video, to no one’s surprise, gave me some more technical issues. This time, the specific issues I had gave me some new ideas, and will hopefully help with my confidence in making more DS content in the future. Hopefully, this is helpful for anyone else who is in the same boat.
It boils down to one thing: my 3DS’ capabilities. I recorded all of my Tomodachi Life footage through Luma3DS & Snickerstream, which depends solely on wireless connection and can really suck. While trying to figure out the logistics of it all a few weeks ago, I did experiment with some other software and researched some other ideas, but this combo was the best I could do if I wanted to make a Tomodachi Life video this month. Or even this year, because the other solution would be to send it in to get capture card hardware installed. Or, learn how to solder. I’m just a girl in this world.
No, I really do want to learn how to do that, and solder a capture card into my 3DS, but I’m not going to lie- I’m nervous. However, after recording the Tomodachi Life video, I personally think I need to do it, or send it in to have it done. The frame rate never went above 32 the entire time I was recording, and would dip so massively that I would sometimes have to re-record things and hope I could simulate the same events in-game, and had to ask my amazing co-editor Lissa to work around it. It was way too difficult of a process, and with all of the future 3DS videos I would like to create, a necessary investment for the channel. Ugh.
Why not just emulate it, you ask? Because I don’t fucking like that. There’s certain games and consoles I am 100% fine with emulating footage from for my videos. But for DS games- I honestly don’t know how people play DS games NOT on the DS, it’s incredibly frustrating for me. And I want to be able to access all features in-game, and for Tomodachi Life, I just don’t think I would be able to do everything I wanted if I didn’t play on the 3DS. Another reason: I’d have to FIGURE OUT how to do that and get as close to the original experience as possible, without having ever played the game before. I’m sure it would only take me a couple hours, but I can open my DS and tap on Tomodachi Life and be playing in under 60 seconds. So, maybe this issue is that I’m lazy and stubborn.
But, overall, I had a blast making this video. Having never experienced the magic of Tomodachi Life, I feel like I’m in the cool kids club now. It’s a very cute and fun game that I’m excited to check in on in the future, and I really look forward to reading everyone’s comments about the gameplay I experienced. Everyone lives a different Tomodachi Life, no one’s experiences are the same. I had a really good time. I also learned way too much about 3DS CFW and the two guys that are still out there modding 3DS hardware.
